L’Aquila : Pope visits earthquake victims

April 28, Pope is in L’Aquila to visit and comfort population. He called civil society to a ” serious examination of conscience” referring to the quake-proof buildings that collapsed.

He also asserted the full support of the Church to the victims.

At least 92 people has died and more than 1.500 has been injuried in the earthquake which has hit l’Aquila, near Rome. This Monday, the quake has torn the town, destroying a large part of the medieval area. Rescuers are searching for survivors and injuried-people.

More than 50 000 people  are homeless. The Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi declared the state of emergency.

The 6.3 magnitude quake, hit L’Aquila, about  60 miles north-east from Rome, where tremors has been felt.

Three significant aftershocks,  ranging from magnitude 4.3 to 4.8,  shook the area within six hours of the 6.3 quake. As a consequence, many small towns and villages around L’Aquila have been seriously damaged by the aftershocks.
